THE STORY
BEHIND THE MOMENT.

October Creator Spotlight · Breast Cancer Awareness Month Edition

For Northern Virginia sports photographer Mino, the value of a photograph comes from what it allows someone to remember. The final score tells one part of a game. His images aim to preserve the rest: the pressure, the celebrations, the friendships, and the emotions that give those moments meaning.

Through Mino.flicks, he is building a name around that approach. His journey has taken him from photographing familiar faces to covering professional soccer, but the purpose remains connected to the people in front of his camera.

This October, N3W ERA MEDIA’s Creator Spotlight looks at the person behind those images, the work shaping his future, and why preserving memories carries particular weight for him during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

SECTION 02

One Invitation Changed His Direction

Mino’s photography journey began when his best friend, German, invited him to a football game during German’s senior year. Recognizing his eye for photography, German asked why he wasn’t pursuing it seriously.

That question stayed with him.

Sports had already been a major part of Mino’s life. Photography offered another way to stay close to the game while meeting people and discovering opportunities he hadn’t imagined. What began with an invitation gradually became something he wanted to build his future around.

Even while working other jobs, his attention kept returning to photography. He wanted to put his effort into something he enjoyed and could take pride in developing.

Looking back, he remains grateful to the friend who encouraged him to begin.

SECTION 03

Photographing the Feeling

Mino describes his style as emotional, intense, and focused on storytelling. He wants viewers to experience something of the game through his photographs, whether that means the excitement after a goal or the frustration of a difficult moment.

“I believe the best photographs tell a story without needing a caption.”

One of his favorite examples came when Herndon varsity defeated Westfield during the regular season. Many of the Herndon players were people he had grown up around, making the matchup personal.

According to Mino, Herndon had eliminated Westfield the previous year on its way to winning states. That history added meaning to another Herndon victory. When the players ran toward him celebrating, he captured a moment whose importance he understood beyond the viewfinder.

Knowing the people in the photograph changed what it meant to make it. He was preserving a memory for friends whose excitement he shared.

“That exact moment can never be recreated, and that’s what makes photography so meaningful to me.”

Bigger Opportunities, the Same Purpose

Mino’s accomplishments include photographing D.C. United and the Washington Spirit, meeting Trinity Rodman, and covering regional finals, state finals, and Copa Talento.

Each opportunity has given him room to improve and a clearer sense of what might come next. He takes pride in that progress while recognizing how much he still wants to learn.

His purpose also extends to the high school athletes whose careers may never reach a professional stadium. Their seasons, friendships, and achievements deserve to be remembered.

“Not every athlete is going to play professionally, but that doesn’t make their journey any less important.”

For Mino, giving players and families something meaningful to revisit is an accomplishment of its own.

SECTION 04

Earning His Place

The opportunities Mino has earned come with work that continues long after a game ends. Photographing the action is only part of the process. Editing hundreds of images, balancing other responsibilities, and getting people to take him seriously have all challenged him as a young creator.

He has learned that consistency matters just as much as getting access. Not every opportunity arrives on its own, and building his name has meant reaching out, learning from mistakes, and showing what he can do through the work he delivers.

“Sometimes you have to create your own opportunities and prove what you’re capable of through your work.”

That effort carries into how he reviews his photographs. After each game, Mino looks back at his timing, composition, and editing to identify what he could improve. He also pays attention to other photographers while continuing to develop an identity of his own.

His advice to someone starting out follows the same approach: begin with what you have, practice, and take each opportunity seriously. Expensive equipment does not replace the willingness to learn.

For Mino, progress means building relationships, staying professional, and continuing through the difficult days. Those habits connect the photographer covering familiar faces in Northern Virginia with the one hoping to work on soccer’s biggest stages. Each assignment gives him another chance to develop the skills and relationships that could help him get there.

SECTION 05

A Different Path to Barcelona

Growing up, Mino dreamed of playing for FC Barcelona. His life took another direction, but photography has given that ambition a new form.

He hopes to photograph the club in the UEFA Champions League, capturing players such as Lamine Yamal, Pedri, and Gavi. Traveling to Spain and working around the team he grew up admiring would carry meaning beyond another credential.

“For me, it would be a full-circle moment.”

Over the next five years, he wants to grow his name, travel, and cover fútbol in Europe. He understands that reaching those goals will require patience, sacrifice, and continued work.

SECTION 06

Beyond the Game

October’s awareness focus carries personal significance for Mino. He recently lost a family member to cancer, a mother whose children are now growing up without her.

He wants her remembered for her hard work, her character, and the love she gave her family. Seeing her children navigate that loss has reinforced his understanding that cancer affects entire families.

“Behind every person affected by cancer, there’s a family, a story, and people who love them.”

During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, he believes creators can use their platforms to bring attention to those experiences and encourage support. Sharing information and supporting community events are ways to direct some of that attention toward others.

His message to people affected by cancer is grounded in care: their stories matter, and they deserve support. He recognizes that everyone experiences hardship differently. Sometimes, checking in and listening can mean more than finding the perfect words.

SECTION 07

The Journey Continues

Being featured in N3W ERA MEDIA’s Creator Spotlight gives Mino an opportunity to share the effort and experiences behind his photographs.

He hopes his story encourages someone else to take their passion seriously, even before they know where it might lead. His own journey began with a friend’s invitation and a question he chose to act on.

“This is only the beginning for Mino.flicks, and I’m excited to see where the journey takes me.”
